Things to think about

  • Keep your password/passcode confidential

  • Create your own Apple ID/online account and do not disclose personal details

  • Check that social media account settings are private

  • Turn off location services for certain apps? (eg findmyfriends and Snap Maps) and use location services to allow safe trusted adults/support people to view location

  • Be mindful of sharing location? eg avoid posting details of your whereabouts

  • Avoid accepting followers/friend request from people who you don’t (even if you have several mutual friends)

  • If you feel comfortable to do so, speak to your friends about what they post about you and how they include you on their social media ie identifying your location

  • Consider setting up a code word/phrase/emoji for your trusted support people to check in on you or use as a call for help

  • Lock your smartphone and do not give the PIN to anyone

  • Turn off Bluetooth ono. your phone when not in use

  • Avoid buying or using a ‘jail-broken’ phone as this device will be more vulnerable to spyware

  • Memorise the numbers for 24/7 helpline, your close friend and family members

  • Have your mobile phone checked by your service provider for any spyware or tracking apps

  • Use ‘igcognito’ mode to search for jobs, housing or DFV support. Using this mode will ensure that internet sites you visit will not show up on your history. Press CTR SHIFT N on your computer.
